While branding is one of the newest ways artists can jumpstart or prolong their career, most artists don't understand how choosing a name or a logo/design may be utilized to effectively take their career to the next level. This webinar is for those artists who would like to understand more about choosing a name, understanding what a trademark is and how it is different from a trade name, the role a trademark may play in an artists' overall brand, and ways an artist may be able to protect his/her mark.


The Presenters:

Jo-Ná A. Williams, Principal/Attorney, J.A. Williams Law P.C. As an artist event planner for 10 years and former background vocalist, Jo-Na has always been a part of the artist community. Her experience reflects first-hand knowledge of an artist’s needs personally and professionally. Protecting and educating artists is her passion and her life’s purpose. She founded J.A. Williams Law P.C. (The Artist Empowerment Firm) in 2011 to provide artists and entrepreneurs with legal assistance on intellectual property, business law, and ways to successfully navigate their careers in the entertainment industry. She is dedicated to issues regarding the rights of artists because she believes they are a population highly vulnerable to exploitation without proper knowledge. She is licensed to practice law in New York. Her professional affiliations include, the American Bar Association, New York State Bar Association, New York County Law Association, and LeGal:The Lesbian and Gay Bar Association of Greater New York.


Sheri Mason is an attorney at Morse, Barnes-Brown & Pendleton, where her practice focuses primarily on trademark law, including clearance searches and the trademark application and registration process. A significant component of Sheri’s intellectual property work has been in the arts and entertainment areas. Prior to joining the firm, Sheri served as the director of legal services for the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts of Mass (a program of the Arts & Business Council.) Sheri is also a co-chair of the Arts, Sports, and Entertainment Law sub-committee of the Boston Bar Association and is a member of the Public Relations Committee of the Woman’s Bar Association. Sheri is an attorney instructor with LawTutors, LLC where she tutors bar students for the Massachusetts or New York bar exam, and is the editor of the bar exam essay preparation book, What Not to Write: New York
